Here are 12 Duties that a Physician Assistant Has

A physician assistant does a lot on a daily basis for physicians. Physicians have a lot of patients that they manage, so when they aren’t available to for walk in appointments the PA can work in place of the physician. This health care career started in the 1960’s. PAs are medical professionals that have to be licensed by their state before they can start practicing medicine. PAs are always supervised physician and surgeons. It doesn’t matter how much work experience they or their academic background, they will always be supervised by a physician.

Even though they are supervised by a physician, they can pretty much do 80% of the health care services that were traditionally meant to be done by a physician. There are different limitations for PAs concerning what they are allowed to do within their scope of practice. There are state laws that determine what a PA can do while working, and it can also depend on the physician themselves. They perform routine tasks and they do tasks that are given to them by their supervising physician. There are general duties that every physician assistant is able to do no matter their state. They all record and file patient medical histories

During surgeries, the PA will be in the surgery room assisting the surgeon or physician

They develop a treatment plan that best suits the patient’s condition and they carry out that plan

PAs perform physical exams on walk in patients or patients who just need a physical exam

They are all able to order laboratory tests and interpret the results of these tests

Assistants are able to come with a diagnosis for a patient’s illness
They can refer patients to specialists that can help them better with their condition

They can administer shots for patients like immunization shots
They treat minor injuries like sutures, splints and casts
The counsel patients on better ways to manage their health
They can prescribe medications for patients with chronic and acute illnesses

They order rehabilitation therapies for patients

Physician assistants will also need to be able to assist a physician who has a specialty, meaning they will need to be knowledgeable of their specialty. If the physician is a surgeon then the PA will need to be able to work with surgical equipment and they will have to be able to provide post operative care and pre operative care to patients before and after they’re out of surgery.
